I grew up in South Dakota, and at 11 I received a job as an usher at a neighborhood movie show. My movie faculty was watching films — and the way audiences reacted to them — over and over. I started visiting movie archives and interviewing movie personalities who responded to my outreach. I used to be hooked.

I arrived on campus in 1960 as advertising director for American Training Publications, owned on the time by the college.
